Relationship between Cardiovascular Autonomic Neuropathy and Arterial Oxygen Saturation during Sleep in Patients with Non Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus

Abstract

|
Background: Sudden, unexplained deaths are relatively common in patients with diabetes. The mortality of diabetic patients with autonomic neuropathy is higher than those without autonomic neuropathy. In addition, impaired hypoxic ventilatory drive in diabetic patient with autonomic neuropathy has been reported. To evaluate the hypothesis that sudden death maybe due to respiratory dysfunction rather than cardiac dysfunction, we analyzed relationship between nocturnal hypoxemia during sleep(NHS) and various clinical features in 80 patients with NIDDM.
